Sickening news about the immigration prison:
In another case that year, investigators from the agency’s Office of Professional Responsibility concluded that unbearable, untreated pain had been a significant factor in the suicide of a 22-year-old detainee at the Bergen County Jail in New Jersey, and that the medical unit was so poorly run that other detainees were at risk.

The investigation found that jail medical personnel had falsified a medication log to show that the detainee, a Salvadoran named Nery Romero, had been given Motrin. The fake entry was easy to detect: When the drug was supposedly administered, Mr. Romero was already dead.
Officials Hid Truth of Immigrant Deaths in Jail (New York Times)

Michael Vick's dogs? Media sensation. Over hundred people dying under America's care because they did not receive even the most basic medical treatment? A blip that will soon be forgotten. Such is the world we live in.

  2. I made a mistake of reading the comments on msn newsvine. The general consensus seemed to be

    1. These Mexi- illegals deserved it because they make Americans suffer (... financially)

    2. Who cares? They broke the law so they don't have any rights.

    3. Kil- Deport them all!

I was surprised that they were still calling themselves human beings.

  3. "Over hundred people dying under America's care because they did not receive even the most basic medical treatment?"

The article speaks for itself, so there's really no need to completely mischaracterize and fabricate as your statement above does.

If you re-read the article, you'll see that 107 number is the total number of deaths that occurred within the entire system from October 2003 to present, and nowhere in the article does it even imply that all of those deaths were due to lack of medical treatment. Nor does it attempt to put forth even a guess at how many were of natural causes and how many were due to negligence/lack of proper treatment. For all you know, it could be 100 normal deaths of natural causes, and seven with irregularities.

It mentions several specific examples, which are certainly horrific and surely indicate a broken system, but to imply as you did that over one hundred people died because they did not receive even the most basic medical treatment is not supported by the facts of the article.

If you want to go through the article and count the specific cases mentioned with EVIDENCDE of mistreatment or lack of care, you might come up with a number of what, 4 or 5? Not quite over one hundred as you stated, so I assume you'll be fixing the post to correct your mistake, as well as reading more carefully in the future.

  5. What’s up with the vague phrasing here, “Bergen County Jail in New Jersey, and that the medical unit was so poorly run that other detainees were at risk?” So are only those incarcerated on immigration matters at risk or are all the prisoners at risk? The Times neglected to point out that Bergen County Jail houses all types of criminals, not just those detained on immigration violations.

I 'love' how the NY Times brings this subject up quite often (at least once a year) but somehow neglects to mention all the U.S. citizens who die in city and county jails all across the country all the time.

The Times has its own agenda here, or else they would have actually bothered to look into all jails and their occupants’ citizenship and breaking down the number of deaths in all jails/prisons across the country during the same time frame. Immigration reform and amnesty equals newspaper sales as it is a hot button issue. Another Joe Blow American tying one on, getting conked in the head by a fellow inmate/guard, and dying in a jail cell without treatment, won’t even amount to as much as a blip in this big city paper.
