According to the new WHO survey, Koreans are the 13th heaviest drinkers in the world. The survey broke down the types of alcohol into beer, wine and spirits, and Koreans lead the world in per capita spirits consumption. Ah, the wonders of soju.
Interesting post. I'm not too surprised about this as drinking is quite integrated into the Korean social scene. I'm surprised that Korea isn't higher on this list! :)
What a joke...last time I check marijuana never killed anyone. No wonder tiger moms are so popular in Korea...there all just drunks yelling and beating there kids. Guess America and Korea have big differences in what we see as child abuse and in home counseling. Funny how the so called educated look down on the greatest plant to ever grown (ya do some research marijuana kills cancer and many other diseases) yet scream and shout about the heralds of alcohol...
Almost all Koreans are "too proud" to ask for help when they have a drinking problem(Aren't man enough to admit it). If only there were half as many AA locations as whore houses(double barber shop poles, Anma's, Kiss Rooms, etc...). And don't forget about Al-Anon for family members of alcoholics, they suffer too -- hence the Ajumma who doesn't get any support and may turn "wacko" while living with an alcoholic.
The Korean is a Korean American living in Washington D.C. He lived in Seoul until he was 16, then moved to Los Angeles area. The Korean refers to himself in the third person because he thinks it sounds cool.

ReplyDeleteWhat, Hungary is down to third place? I have to go open a beer, those Czechs are beating us!
ReplyDeleteMakes me so proud! =)
ReplyDeleteKorea is second in "spirits" consumption. Poland leads the world.
ReplyDeleteHAHAHA... Now if only we could hold our liquor...
