That would be an extra kick in the pants now wouldn't it? Prior to delving into ASL and Deaf studies, I too thought of interpretation and translation as you did. You really got me thinking, maybe people think of ASL as a performance since it isn't orally communicated.

last-thread, I typed what I meant. I may be incorrect, but I thought was paraphrasing used within the same language to have an alternate way to say something.

Regardless, I believe we can all agree that it's not always an easy task to communicate from one language to another. I find the varying onomatopoeias especially fun!Pamcakes!https://www.blogger.com/profile/07826868949710389048noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36405856.post-25193950900003761942011-02-16T19:10:12.362-05:002011-02-16T19:10:12.362-05:00Pam, I think the words you meant to use may have b...Pam, I think the words you meant to use may have been metaphrase/formal equivalence (a literal translation, line by line, word by word) and paraphrase/dynamic equivalence (translating that conveys word-sense and thought expressed in a source text, sometimes at the expense of literalness and original word order).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36405856.post-44628238011842351392011-02-14T16:43:03.799-05:002011-02-14T16:43:03.799-05:00Torm, sorry, didn't notice the question until ...Torm, sorry, didn't notice the question until just now. You almost always lose something on the way... It must be specially difficult to translate between two languages and cultures as different as Korean and English... I noticed there is often two translators for Korean books translated in French( one Korean translator and one french translator), is it the same in the States? Or maybe the translatore there are mostly Korean Americans?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36405856.post-82263417938246147912011-02-14T13:35:04.808-05:002011-02-14T13:35:04.808-05:00Pam, if we are to use the words "translate&qu...Pam, if we are to use the words "translate" and "interpret" the way you suggested, the Korean would think that interpretation is the only acceptable way of going from one language to the other.T.K. The interpreter is to convey the meaning of the original communication utilizing the grammar, emotion, and culture of the alternate language.

That information in mind, TK, do you prefer translation or interpretation?Pamcakes!https://www.blogger.com/profile/07826868949710389048noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36405856.post-71908029707036720942011-02-12T23:15:07.580-05:002011-02-12T23:15:07.580-05:00Dear AAK,

Also, Please Look After Mom by Kyung-Sook Shin, will be coming out on April 5th. It's a real tear-jerker and might sell with the Oprah Book-club crowd.

I'll be reviewing Waxen Wings at KTLIT in more detail in a day or two. It's really quite good.

CharlesCharles Montgomeryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17489538189139910055noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36405856.post-700814646592574342011-02-12T15:07:06.923-05:002011-02-12T15:07:06.923-05:00I am actually half way done reading this book!
